Fossil walrus ivory or old walrus ivory is derived from two sources. The majority of this ivory is excavated by Eskimos from old village sites and is 100 to 2,500 years old. The color of the ivory is dependent on the length of time buried and the color of the soil. A lesser amount of old walrus ivory is collected along the beach after a storm and is called Beach Ivory. Some of the beach ivory is washed out of old village sites, now underwater, and is recognizable as artifacts. Most of the beach ivory is derived from walruses which have died from natural causes
